Personally, I believe that cyberspace is a great place to exchange ideas and even feelings (limited as the forum may be) but we have to stay balanced with our "real" relationships. Perhaps this is a non issue. A mature person can stay rooted in their "present" relationships and still connect in a different way online.
The internet is a GREAT tool and it has impacted communications in a powerful way. As an aspiring musician, I appreciate the immediate access it gives to people who would never otherwise hear my sounds.

It has taken away time from my personal family and close friend relationships over the years, but I've cut down on the amount of time I spend online quite a bit and that doesn't seem to be a problem any longer. On the other hand I have met some great friends online, especially with other musicians. Many of them, from all over the world, I have met offline and some I have recorded with and some I have performed live with. I organized a trip to Las Vegas a few years ago with musicians I'd met and worked with online and it was a great 4 days! I've met hundreds, maybe thousands of people online that I would call acquaintances, but the nice thing is that I've met several that I can honestly call friends. 
I used to have a pretty negative view of on-line relationships. I've always liked e-mail. Being a military wife, it's a must for keeping touch with Army friends all over the world.
